Permanent Hair Reduction?
Laser hair removal is a bit of a misnomer. What you are actually getting is permanent hair reduction. We are all born with all of the hair follicles that we will ever have. It is just a matter of whether those follicles are active or inactive. If they were all active at the same time, we would look very similar to our Neanderthal ancestors! Laser hair removal kills a percentage of our actively growing hairs, permanently reducing the amount of hair that will be visible in the treatment area.
Laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis. The light of the laser is attracted to the chromophores or colour of the hair, heats it up, and kills the hair follicle. Laser hair removal in ineffective on white, grey, some red, and very fine hair. The light of an IPL machine will also be attracted to the chromophores or melanin in your skin. IPL machines are unsuitable for laser hair removal on darker skin types (Types V and VI on the Fitzpatrick Scale), as it may result in changes in pigmentation and/or burns. A patch test will be conducted prior to treatment commencing, to make sure that laser hair removal is suitable for you.
